Christmas lunch

A small but select group met at Morrison's café to depart on a ride to Aldwickbury where the lunch was scheduled. Kevan led the pack along a wiggly route to arrive at the edge of Harpenden by 12 noon. Only one puncture on the ride even though the roads were filthy. Kevan demonstrated his skills to mend the puncture using a self-adhesive patch, without entirely removing the tube, as the hole was visible near the valve.

The Christmas lunch at Aldwickbury Golf Club was a resounding success again this year.
The 'Potterers' did their own thing and therefore were not present.
Despite this there were 63 diners and so the consolidation of the 'club' is intact, thankfully.
Let's hope we can continue in the same vein and look forward to 2020.
Dan's medal!

Dan apparently was awarded a "bravery" award - for what I'm not sure.

04-08-2019 Ride London

Tony O'Byne, Roger Thompson and Julian Olver sent me these selfies after Ride London.  For Roger it was his first time and for Tony his umpteenth.  Good weather this year but the usual accidents closed off part of the route.  The best bits I think are whizzing through London on
good car free roads with huge crowds.  Well done everyone.

01-08-2019 Thursday Riders at Sibthorpe Arms celebrate Kevan Harrop's birthday

Thursday rides start from the Green Man, Sandridge allowing members to make their own route to the pub of the day.  Kevan led a group of ten on an excellent, circuitous route.  On this
ride few of us could guess which direction Kev would take next: when we expected him to turn left he turned right and vice versa, leading us through back doubles only a few local riders know.  Kevan had kept his birthday secret, but Anne Jarman had arranged a card for him which passed surreptitiously around the diners and soon filled up with good wishes.  What a good pub the Sibthorpe Arms is, a long time club favourite with friendly staff, good food - all on a lovely sunny day!

16-07-2019 Inter Riders Car Assist Ride led by Jane Elsmore starting at Musette, Aldbury

14 Inter Riders at the start of the Car Assist Ride, at Musette, a new cycling cafe in Aldbury.  Jane Elsmore led us on a terrific ride up into the Chilterns and down for lunch at the Old White Swan, Cheddington where we were joined by Tony O Byrne.  A superb ride in glorious sunshine with the hills in the morning and a few in the afternoon leading to a glorious fast downhill and across the plain.  Coffee, tea and cake at Jane and Dave's house, what a lovely way to end a perfect day.

27-06-2019 Thursday Riders enjoying the sun

n a week when our south of St Albans experts (Kevan Harrop and Roger Pask) were away in Norfolk with the West Herts CTC, we struggled to find our way to the Roundbush but it was worth it.  Heading back to St Albans, some of us followed a Garmin recommended route along Blackbirds Lane (sounds like a road doesn't it) towards Bricket Wood.  This was a route that could have served well as a mountain bike test track.  But it was at least dry, the sun shone and we all made it safely back onto proper roads.  Pat Kennedy, Charlie Lynn, Chris Horn and Steve Rickard are pictured on a bridge crossing the Colne.

20-06-2019 40 Plus Plus cyclists celebrate with Doug Nevel

Pat Kennedy writes:  Octogenarian members of the St Albans Section of the Forty Plus-Plus Cycling Club, celebrating at Lemsford, Herts, the 88th birthday on 11 June 2019, of Douglas Nevell, fourth from left.   He was quickly followed on 12 June with the 88th birthday celebrated by Barrie Wood (fifth from left).   The other octogenarians (from left),are Anne Jarman, 82, with Alan and Mavis Wallace (both still only 81 years of age), Edward Pepper, 83 and doyen Patrick Kennedy, 88.   Despite their apparent non-cycling attire, all regularly attend the club’s Tuesday and Thursday rides, keeping themselves fit and healthy.

17-06-2019 the rain holds off - good rides for those who joined us on Tuesday

The weather forecast promised rain from 10 onwards but Poppins was surprisingly busy with A, Inter, B and C riders.  The C Riders rode to Moor Mill and Chris Rice, their ride leader wrote "We were so lucky with the weather.  Our ride was mainly off road and C group rose to the challenge.  We passed by fields of red, white and blue (poppies, daisies and cornflowers), cycled along the River Colne and River Ver, saw swans, baby moorhens and red kites". Inters had a good turnout for Tony O'Byrnes annual Lee Valley ride; past the Olympic watersports centre and the many sculptures in the Lea Valley Park.  It had rained while we were at lunch but otherwise held off.  Rudi's A Ride tried a new pub, the Goat in Hertford Heath, which Kev told us later was a success and offers us a good new pub venue for the club in a less visited location.
All agreed an unexpectedly good days riding.

2019-06-03 Pete Wilkins 1929-2019

From Pat Kennedy - a photograph of the late Peter Wilkins, that I took in March 2014.  The photo demonstrates Peter's smart turnout, including his gleaming bicycle.   Alas, he never wore a cycle helmet that could have afforded some protection when he hit a pothole and crashed off his bike on his way to meet-up with the Forty Plus CC in Sandridge in March 2016.   I was pleased to note that the photo was reproduced in his funeral Order of Service, held in Hendon on 28 May 2019.   Don Wallace, President, Forty Plus CC gave a glowing tribute at Peter's cremation service.

Kevan Harrop writes: Peter was a modest man, a stalwart, a gentleman and a perfectionist.  An extremely intelligent man who always had time to speak to, and show interest in, people. He had a cheeky disposition - particularly with the members of the opposite sex who, without exception, all took a shine to him! He always called them 'dear' and was polite to a fault. It was interesting to listen to him talk of his past, from leaving the RAF to living above, and working on the cheese-counter of, one of the original J. Sainsbury high street shops, to working as a motorcycle mechanic - he had a phenomenal memory. His knowledge of bike (and motorcycle) mechanics was exceptional.  His bikes were always immaculate and he was a superb rider. I remember following him, in his draft, riding as steady as a rock with no rolling of the head nor the body, no matter what the terrain - poetry in motion. It was a complete shock when he had the accident which curtailed his riding, hitting a much-obscured pothole - Peter just didn't have accidents!  When we visited him in the nursing home he was just the same as he had always been - just not riding his beloved bike.  Irreplaceable!

2019-05-23 Sibthorpe Arms - Thursday Ride from Green Man via Wildhill to Welham Green

Steve and Mike photographed at the Sibthorpe Arms after a lovely ride led by Kevan Harrop.  Steve Rickard is doing his Arnold Scwartznegger impression and Mike is therefore Danny Devito.  Good lunch for about 16 of us sat in the marquee on a bright sunny day.  Twins quote for film buffs:
